| | | MP3 Player Designed for Educational Usage | | |
The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) recently tested popular MP3 devices and found that they all produce sound well above the maximum recommended safety level of 85 decibels. As many studies have found that irreparable hearing loss can result from high levels of noise over extended periods of time, Califone designed its MP3 player to meet the ASHA recommended decibel-level (the only manufacturer to do so) through its innovative Sentinel™ technology.
The technology behind the Sentinel™ feature enables teachers to set the maximum audio allowed to 85 decibels, which is one of three recommended guidelines contained within the ASHA-sponsored America: Tuned In Today . . But Tuned Out Tomorrow? campaign (www.listentoyourbuds.org). The aim of the campaign is to educate and encourage the responsible (student) use of personal audio technology.
Another educator-driven feature on the Califone MP3 Player is its built-in electret microphone, enabling student-created podcasting. Podcasting meets California NETS Technology Standard #4 (and similar standards in other states) as follows: Students use telecommunications to collaborate, publish, and interact with peers, experts, and other audiences; Students use a variety of media and formats to communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences.
