MP3 Player Designed for Educational UsageThe American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) recently tested popular MP3 devices and found that they all produce sound well above the maximum recommended safety level of 85 decibels. The technology behind the Sentinel™ feature enables teachers to set the maximum audio allowed to 85 decibels, which is one of three recommended guidelines contained within the ASHA-sponsored America: Tuned In Today . . But Tuned Out Tomorrow? campaign (www.listentoyourbuds.org). The aim of the campaign is to educate and encourage the responsible (student) use of personal audio technology.

Another educator-driven feature on the Califone MP3 Player is its built-in electret microphone, enabling student-created podcasting. Podcasting meets California NETS Technology Standard #4 (and similar standards in other states) as follows: Students use telecommunications to collaborate, publish, and interact with peers, experts, and other audiences; Students use a variety of media and formats to communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences.
